BEST FRIEND BAKERY:
SUGAR AND SPICE:
WHUMPH!
I yelled in shock as something or someone landed square on my tummy waking me from a dream where i was decorating ten different cakes all once in front on a TV audience.
Hannah! molly squealed.Wake up! I'd barley sat up in bed when.
WHUMPH! Ella joined her. Its morning Hannah! She sang throwing her arms around my neck. I think she was trying to hug me but it felt more like being strangled.
It really is morning. Molly bounced off the bed and tugged open the curtains look.
Get up! Please, " Ella begged. I glanced at my alarm clock. Six o' clock. Instead of groaning as i normally would have done at that time in the morning, my heart jump. Today was opening day! Mum would already be at the bakery. Right now she'd probably be taking the pastries out of the oven and starting on the scones. In a few hours the first customers would start hurrying in. I'd wanted to go with her first thing, but she'd said i deserved a lie in after all the work we'd done yesterday, and had arranged for mark to drop me off when he took the twins to their new child minder. I couldn't wait.
The twins were exploring my room now. One of the good things about moving was planning what my bedroom would like. In our old flat, my room had been the same since i was six pink curtains fairies on the wall and a castle shaped mirror which is fine if you' re six, but not so good when you're nearly eleven.
OK, so i didn't get the TV and laptop, but i do have pretty much everything else. I spent ages unpacking and getting in just right. The twins pulled a drawer out from my desk.
Nail varnish! shouted molly.
Let's paint our nails! Ella said starting to unscrew the top of a silver polish.
I flung the duvet back and jumped up.
OH, NO!
Please, molly wheedled.
We like painting our nails said Ella looking at me with big brown eyes.
I'm sure they do, but i could imagine the mess they would make. No way was that happening in my perfect new room, no matter how good a big sister i was trying to be. How about we go downstairs and make some pancakes instead? We've got everything we need flour eggs.
Pancakes! yippee! they both cried and ran the door.
I pulled on my dressing own and followed them.
Is that you Hannah! mark called sleepily as i padded along the landing in my slippers.
Yeah. I've said i'll go down and make dome pancakes with the twins.
Do you need a hand?
No, don't worry. I'll be fine. I'll yell if i need you.
Thanks, he said, You're a star.
By the time i got to the kitchen the twins had already fetched the box of eggs. How do you crack an egg , Hannah?
Molly said, waving an egg over the table.
Carefully! I gasped swooping before she could drop it.
First we need a bowl. I got everything else out and then showed molly how to the crack the eggs against the side of the bowl and gently pull the two halves apart.
You can do another two eggs like that, molly, while Ella measure out the flour with me.
The twins did everything i asked quiet for a once as they concentrated hard.
When the batter was ready, Molly and Ella dragged chairs over to where they could see the cooker and stood on them to watch what. I was doing. I heated oil in the frying pan, then swirled a ladle of the batter around so it coated the base of the pan. I love making pancakes. OK, its's not strictly baking but there's something magical about watching the runny pale batter turn into a delicious golden pancakes.
MY TIPS FOR MAKING PANCAKES:
Use a non stick frying pan with fairly flat sides so you can toss it and make sure it's not too heavy or you won't be able toss the pancakes easily.
Don't put to much batter in the frying pan or the pancake will be thick and rubbery.
Don't use too much butter to cook the pancake, just enough to coat the bottom of the pan.
Yummy! said Ella.
Can i lick the bowl when we've finished? Molly asked.
Its not like cake mixture, I warned. It won't taste nice.
You just want it all for yourself , molly said pouting.
I grinned. Oh, do i ? i remembered when I was little and had made the same mistakes my self. I handed them a spoonful of batter mixture.
Go on then. Try it, i invited waiting for their reaction.
Yuck they pulled faces.
Told you, i said laughing. Right it's time to toss the pancake! The twins whooped as i flipped the pancakes in the air and caught it. Success!
Molly and Ella ate flour pancakes each covered with lemon and sugar. As they ate i told them a story about a magic pancakes that could grant wishes. It reminded me of mum doing the same thing with me and it was pretty cool being able to do it with my new little sisters. Kind of how i'd always imagined being a big sisters would be. I suddenly felt really glad that mum had married mark. Even if it did mean that i had to put up with two human alarm clock warning me up every morning. When the twins ran off to watch cartoons i sat down to have two pancakes myself.
Mark came downstairs and i offered him some too.
Yes please i never turn pancakes down. I poured the last of the batter into the pan. Thanks for looking after the girls Hannah he looked around and grinned. Even if the kitchen does look like a bomb's hit it......
